Today’s Scripture

James 3:14

WISDOM FOR EVERYDAY LIVING
The word “wisdom” seems like it doesn’t apply to the book of James at first glance. But as it turns out, there is wisdom in today’s Bible verse,

“But if you have bitter envy and a self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.” (James 3:14)

James says that those who are “wise and understanding” should not appear as if they know it all, because they don’t and those that are truly “wise” should know this. He encourages us to get the wisdom of God, or as he puts it “the wisdom from above”. Godly wisdom is characterized by purity, peace, gentleness, reason, mercy, good fruits, impartiality, and sincerity.

Take a look at each of these descriptions:

“Pure”. Godly wisdom is holy because it has its origin in God. In contrast, this purity with the earthly wisdom is all about us (“selfish ambition“).

“Peaceable”. God’s word is peaceable to anyone who accepts it. Those who listen to earthly wisdom are only in it for themselves, but they care nothing about God.

“Gentle”. We see the contrast between Godly wisdom and earthly wisdom.

“Open to reason”. The wisdom of God is compliant with God and obedient to God’s will. Earthly wisdom is not.

“Full of mercy” The only wisdom we can give each other is the earthly wisdom spoken. God gives us greater wisdom that is from Him above.

“Full of good fruits”. God’s wisdom results only in things that are good.

“Impartial”. God’s wisdom won’t direct one person one direction and another person in another direction. It is always the same

“Sincere”.  God’s wisdom is sincere. God’s wisdom doesn’t ask us to do anything that He wouldn’t do Himself.

James tells us after listing all of the characteristics of “the wisdom from above” that by using this wisdom from God we can obtain righteousness that is sown in peace. He urges Believers to abandon their own wisdom and pursue the wisdom from God. Only then will you truly have “peace”.

“Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3:18)

Every Believer also has the responsibility of working towards peace with others. We should make sure that we are promoting and using the wisdom from God. Then we can achieve true harmony with others.
