Being tempted is not sin. Sin occurs when, after I am tempted, I allow that temptation to become an action. The best way to conquer temptation is to squelch it quickly.

Eve failed to do this in the Garden when the serpent tempted her to eat of the forbidden fruit. (See Genesis 3).

She confessed that God had put a restriction on what she could eat. She said:

We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. (Genesis 3:3)

She was off to a good start. But then, she considered the fruit. She saw that it was good for food and pleasant to the eye, a tree to be desired to make one wise.

In other words, she subjected God’s command to her own powers of reasoning.

Based upon her observation and evaluation, there was no reason why she and her husband should not eat the fruit.

Do you trust that God knows more about you and your world than you do? Do you trust that God sets limits for reasons you may or may not understand? Have you pledged to live your life according to the teachings of the Bible?

If you answered yes to those questions, don’t presume to second-guess God. Endure temptations, but don’t succumb to them. Keep pushing forward to receive the crown of life, which the Lord promises to those who love Him.
