I remember the first time I heard the acronym, ADHD. You can imagine my first thought. What in the hell is ADHD and is it contagious? All of a sudden, ADHD was popping up all around me like Dandelions in Spring. It turns out that ADHD is the acronym for Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder. ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active.

That my friends, is some big long words to describe a condition that has been around since children were first born. When I was in grammar school, we had a regularly issued document that required a parent’s signature. It was called a Report Card. When opened, the left side of this report reflected my grade averages in alpha format (A-F) for my various classes. The right side had a list of  common expectations followed by a Y or N for Yes or No.

One of the expectations was…Pays Attention In Class. I can only remember one time when my teacher circled the N…(indicating that I did not pay attention in class.) My Mama did not spank me. Looking straight into my eyes….this is what she said to me, before signing the back of my report card: “I would understand if you had a below average grade in a class, some people learn easier than others. I do not understand why you cannot pay attention in class. Everyone, smart or dumb, can pay attention in class.” That was my first and last N that I received in that category. My Mama’s logic was very easy to understand.

Things have changed in this new world. Report Cards don’t matter because parents do not care or they blame the teachers for the disobedient children.
