Fun Facts…Outer Space Part 1

On Venus, one year lasts the equivalent of 225 Earth days, but one day lasts 243 Earth days…so a day on Venus is longer than a year.

Venus is not alone either. It takes Mercury 88 Earth days to orbit the sun, but the time from sunrise to sunset on the planet is 176 days. So a day on Mercury is almost twice as long as a year.

You could fit more than one million Earths inside the Sun.

Neither the Earth nor the Moon is perfectly spherical. In fact, they are both elongated, like a ball that’s been squashed. The technical term for that shape is an “oblate spheroid”.

Moonlight is not actually light from the Moon because the Moon itself is not a light source. In fact, what we call moonlight is sunlight reflected off the Moon, despite the Sun being out of sight.

Astronomers have averaged out the color of all the visible light in the universe and found that the universe is, on average, slightly beige. They have called this color “Cosmic Latte”.

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, smells faintly of rum. Scientists know that because there is a cloud at the center of our galaxy comprised of a chemical called “ethyl formate,” which as well as giving raspberries their distinctive flavor, has a similar scent to sweet rum.

Every year, the Moon drifts further away from the earth, while the Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing and lengthening our days.
