Sam Bankman-Fried is currently serving his 25-year prison sentence at the low-security Federal Correctional Institution, Terminal Island in Los Angeles, California.

He was transferred there in April 2025 after a brief stay at the Oklahoma City Federal Transfer Center.

Legal Status and Appeal

  • Sentence: Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024 for orchestrating a massive fraud of over $8 billion in customer funds through his FTX cryptocurrency exchange and associated trading firm, Alameda Research.

  • Conviction: A jury found him guilty on all seven counts of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering in November 2023.

  • Appeal: His legal team is in the process of appealing both his conviction and the sentence. Oral arguments for the appeal are scheduled for November 4, 2025.

  • Projected Release Date: Due to potential “Good Conduct Time” and participation in prison programs, his projected release date is currently estimated to be in December 2044, a reduction of about four years from his original sentence.

Life in prison

  • Bankman-Fried has been cut off from the internet and relies on TV for news, trying to gather information about the world and the crypto market.

  • He has been reportedly working on his appeal, reading novels, playing chess with other inmates, and is said to be giving legal advice to others in prison.

  • He was previously housed at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, where he briefly shared a unit with Sean “Diddy” Combs.

  • An unauthorized video interview with Tucker Carlson from the MDC in early March 2025 reportedly landed him in solitary confinement and may have led to his subsequent transfer.
