There are over 7,000 different languages in the world.

On average, one world language is lost when its last native speaker dies, every 40 days.

Worldwide, almost 1.5 billion people speak English, either as their mother tongue or as a second language. If you are an English speaker, you could comfortably communicate with roughly one in every five people on the planet.

The world’s most-spoken first language is Mandarin Chinese. It has more than 950 million native speakers. This means that roughly one-eighth of the entire world speaks Mandarin as their first language.  

French is an official language in 29 different countries worldwide…but it is only the third most-spoken of Europe’s major Romance languages (those descended from Latin), behind Spanish and Portuguese. 

Papua New Guinea is home to more languages, 840…than any other country on the planet. Almost one in eight of all the languages spoken in the world are used in Papua New Guinea.
