Worldwide, bilingual, or multilingual people outnumber monolinguals…if you only speak one language fluently, you are in a global minority.

The English language is popularly said to have more words than any other language on the planet. Although the total number of English words is impossible to quantify, estimates range from around 300,000 to more than one million.

The English alphabet is actually descended via Latin and Greek from the Phoenician alphabet, which emerged on the Mediterranean coast of the Middle East more than 4,000 years ago.

Worldwide, more than 100 countries recognize more than one official language.

Although Hindi is officially recognized as the main language of India, the country’s constitution also recognizes 21 others, including English, Punjabi, Tamil, Sanskrit, and Nepalese.

In total, 447 languages are spoken in India.

Legally, the United States does not have an official language.

In fact, there are two times more Italian speakers in the United States than there are people living in Florence. 

There are more German speakers  in the United States than there are people living in Frankfurt.
