To date, 21 US states have been the birthplace of US presidents.

The state that has been the birthplace of most presidents is Virginia, where eight have so far been born, closely followed by Ohio, which is the home of seven presidents.

To date, 13 US states have only birthed one president each: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and South Carolina.

The first US president actually born in the United States was Martin Van Buren. Van Buren’s family were Dutch, and he only spoke English as a second language. He remains the only president in history not to have spoken English as his mother tongue.
