Beer cans were attached to the perimeter barbed wire barrier to provide an early warning system when someone or something attempted to breach a fortified area. Loose stones were sometimes put in the beer cans to help amplify the sound. Vietnam vets had to use what resources were available to protect against a determined enemy. It might have also been a psychological tactic to remind our adversaries that we had beer to drink while they drank rain water.
