Just my opinion, but the Dems hate Trump so much that they don’t know when to stop digging their own graves. Trump is a master of putting the Dems in the worst possible position and then making them defend that position. Now that Pelosi has caved on sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate, it is time to think ahead in terms of the strategies Trump will use to make the Dems look like fools.
Schumer keeps insisting that they must hear from witnesses if the process is to be fair, despite the fact that he completely ignores the unfair process that took place in the House. I believe he is going to regret ever asking for live testimony in the Senate. It appears that there are at least 4 RINO Senators who will vote with the 47 Dems to bring in witnesses. The Dems really want Bolton to appear before them. I think Trump will exercise his executive privilege with Bolton but will be OK with Bolton testifying on non-privilege matters. Most of that will be hearsay and will be objected to by the Trump team. So the Senate will get to hear from Bolton but learning nothing new and nothing to support the Dems articles of impeachment.
The Trump team, I believe, will counter by insisting that Joe Biden testify and defend his position on Ukraine aid linked to his son’s employment. Trump comes out the winner here because Biden will look like a dirty political hack, which is exactly what he is. This will come just as the Iowa primary is taking place. So Pelosi’s attempt to protect the establishment candidate is likely to implode. Biden must do well in Iowa if he has any chance at the nomination. Trump also wins because the Dems running for the nomination who are members of the Senate must stop their campaigning during the trial. No cell phones are allowed while in session. They cannot talk with one another so they are totally isolated during the run up to the Iowa primary and possibly into the New Hampshire primary. Sorry but the only person to blame is master political genius, Pelosi. The media will be crying a river of reasons why this in unfair.
Next, Schumer will want Nick Mulvaney to testify. Again, Trump will use executive privilege and the Dems again will learn nothing new. This is where it gets interesting. The Trump team will call Shifty Schiff to testify about the non-whistleblower and force him to tell the truth or commit perjury. The Dems will insist that he is immune from testifying but he has no privilege. If John Roberts is called on to decide, he had better support the Trump team. If he fails to support the Trump team, they will then demand that his top staff aide testify – yes the one who is close friends with the non-whistleblower. Now the Trump team will get the dirt on how this all went down, the name of the whistleblower, and how much the Schiff staff helped in writing the complaint, and how much Schiff was involved in the process. This staff guy’s life hangs in the balance if he refuses to testify. I could see Roberts taking some action like sending him to jail until he has a change of heart. Next man up is then the non-whistleblower himself. If the Dems insist that he not appear, then they call the IG who took the complaint and ask them what happened. Nunes is already going after this guy so that should be interesting.
And remember that the Republicans also want to have Chalupa testify about her involvement with Ukraine during the 2016 election cycle. This trial is going to expose the Dems in ways that they never thought possible. Don’t be surprised if several Dem Senators ask for a vote soon after the witnesses start talking because they don’t want their dirty tricks presented to the public.
